But I have not found a head to head comparison. Which one do I want and why? I have been reading the discussions and I understand the mask I choose is probably more important, but that seems to be a more personal choice. This is just hardware and I am wondering which company people feel executed better. Quite is a high priority for me. I think the Resmed has a smaller diameter hose which seems a plus.

Both the S9 and the PR S1 are new to the market. The most discussion on the two I've found has been at cpaptalk. They can be a tough bunch over there but good people. Both the S9 and PR S1 are fairly "drastic" changes over the previous series by these manufacturers so my guess is that it is going to be a matter of time before we really know just how good these two new series of devices are.
I'm on bi-level and the S9 bi-level isn't available yet. It is giving good therapy despite we have yet to find the pressure settings I need. The humidifier is easy to fill and very difficult to make leak. Sturdy, quiet, deliver good therapy, and Resmed has excelled in amount of and ease of access to nightly data via the LCD screen on their fully data capable models.
Respironics did get rid of that extra platform piece they utilized in their previous two series. The S9s power brick is somewhat larger and heavier than the PR S1s.
